Within the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme INTERREG V-A Slovenia-Croatia 2014-2020, in the year 2016 these two countries started with the implementation of the FRISCO1 Project “Cross-Border Harmonized Slovenian-Croatian Flood Risk Reduction 1 – Non Structural Measures”. The purpose of the Project was to improve non-structural measures, natural water retention measures and essential structural flood risk management measures of joint interest in the cross-border basins, including the Sutla/Sotla basin down to its confluence with the Sava. As part of project activities, information, hydrological and hydro-morphological systems for water and risk monitoring and management were developed; data was collected for the development of more precise models to monitor and/or foresee floods and for improved cooperation between the two countries on the civil protection and flood defence systems.

Successful cross-border cooperation in the Sutla/Sotla basin under the INTERREG V-A Slovenia-Croatia 2014-2020 continues through the FRISCO2.1 Project Cross-Border Harmonized Flood Risk Reduction 2.1 – Structural Measure Vonarje Dam. The project foresees improved safety and functionality and the rehabilitation of Vonarje/Sutlansko Lake Dam. These activities include dam repair and rehabilitation within its original dimensions, with the structure’s purpose and basic requirements staying the same.
